IBM announced their System/360 family of computers on April 7, 1964, although it was a couple years more before the system was widely available. The S/360 family consisted of six compatible computers and forty peripherals in contrast to earlier IBM computers that lost their compatibility when a new model was released. The System/360 became a mainstay of business computing for many years with IBM fulfilling orders of 1000 systems per month.
