Tainter Graphophone

1885: Tainter Graphophone

Because of the problems with playback of disc recordings, Sumner Tainter (along with C.A. Bell) set about improving Edison's tin foil cylinder recording mechanism. This was accomplished by cutting a finer groove in wax material. Where the original Edison cylinders played from two to three minutes, the Graphophone cylinders played for about ten minutes. Patents were issued on the Graphophone in 1886.
