Dr. Carnes was overall project leader for the development of the Television CCD comb filter integrated circuit, later modified for CED player use. In addition to project leadership, he was primarily concerned with the application of special CCD video signal processing techniques which involved device development, device layout, device testing and evaluation. This work led to directly applicable pending patents on the comb filter IC.

Jim Carnes and his wife Nancy were among the hosts for the "Aloha Conference" held in February-March 1984 at the Kona Surf Hotel on the Big Island of Hawaii for RCA VideoDisc dealers with outstanding 1983 player sales.
In 1985, Dr. James E. Carnes, Division Vice President, Engineering, RCA Consumer Electronics was selected as an IEEE Fellow "for contributions to the development and practical application of charge-coupled devices, and for technical leadership in consumer electronics."
Princeton, New Jersey (April 2, 2002) - Jim Carnes, the President and CEO of Sarnoff Corporation, the Princeton-based digital video, semiconductor, and biomedical research leader, today announced that he is retiring on June 1, 2002, after exactly 11.5 years in the position.
Satyam Cherukuri, the company's Chief Operating Officer, will replace Carnes, who will continue, on a part-time basis, as a Senior Advisor to the company. "Sarnoff is a unique and exciting company - at the crossroads of government, industry and technology. It has definitely been a rewarding career," Carnes said. "However, I have decided that it's time for a change of pace -- a time for new pursuits.
"In Satyam Cherukuri the company has the right leader as we build on our past accomplishments and move Sarnoff to the next level."
Cherukuri, the new CEO-designate, grew the company's biomedical business as Managing Director of Life Sciences and Systems prior to assuming the COO title. He has been at Sarnoff for 13 years.
"With this decision the Board and I believe that we are replacing one strong, visionary leader with another," said Henry Kressel, Chairman of the company's Board of Directors and a partner and Senior Managing Director for Warburg Pincus Co. LLC, a diversified New York venture capital firm. "We are confident that Satyam will continue and extend the forward-looking leadership that has been a hallmark of Jim's tenure."
About Dr. James E. Carnes
Jim Carnes first worked at Sarnoff Corporation, then the David Sarnoff Research Center of RCA, as a summer intern 36 years ago. He began his career as a researcher, earning nine patents for his work on charge-coupled devices, before moving into the management ranks at RCA in Indianapolis, IN. He rejoined Sarnoff in 1987 after GE acquired RCA, and became President in 1990.

Satyam Cherukuri joined Sarnoff Corporation in 1989, after working as a senior scientist at Olin Corporation specializing in microelectronics packaging. As the Managing Director of the Life Sciences and Biotechnology business unit of Sarnoff Corporation, he directed the development of leading-edge solutions to emerging healthcare needs by emphasizing the convergence of information and solid-state technologies with biological and pharmaceutical sciences. In this position he helped create four venture companies, Orchid BioScience, Delsys Pharmaceuticals, Songbird Hearing, and Locus Discovery. He is the inventor or co-inventor on more than 20 U.S. Patents, and has been in charge of Operations area at Sarnoff since 2000.
