David Hakala joined RCA Picture Tube Division, as a process development engineer, after receiving his PhD in physical chemistry from R.P.I. in 1976. After serving as group leader of the Analytical Laboratory for two years, he joined VideoDisc Operations as Staff Scientist working on material problems and subsequently was Manager of Production Engineering for VideoDisc manufacturing. Currently, he is Manager of Process and Materials Development Engineering. He holds one patent and is the author of several publications.

David Hakala was Vice President of American Manufacturing Operations for Thomson Consumer Electronics when the French company made the decision in 1997 to close the Bloomington plant. He later became Vice President of Product Development for Thomson Multimedia.
Novato, CA - September 5, 2002 - SpatiaLight, Inc. (Nasdaq: HDTV), a developer of state-of-the-art liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) microdisplay devices, has appointed David Hakala as Chief Operating Officer. The announcement was made today by Robert A. Olins, chief executive officer of SpatiaLight.
Stated Mr. Olins, "As we begin to ramp-up our production in order to meet the anticipated demand from OEM's in China, we feel that it is in the best interests of the company to engage the services of an exceptional industry professional who can manage and optimize SpatiaLight's transition into full scale production. David Hakala is an extremely knowledgeable and qualified professional who has more than 26 years of industry experience. I am confident that David will make an outstanding contribution in his role as chief operating officer of SpatiaLight, and I look forward to working closely with him."

During the course of his career, Dr. Hakala has been directly responsible for the manufacturing startup and ramp-up of numerous products, and their associated manufacturing facilities, including several models of HDTV and of HDTV-ready televisions, the DTC-100 HD TV/DBS decoder box, the decoder box for the DirecTV DBS satellite system as well as 31" and 35" Very Large Screen (VLS) direct view CRT's, among others. Prior to joining SpatiaLight, from 1994 to 2001, Dr. Hakala served in various senior management positions with Thomson Multimedia, including Vice President of Manufacturing Operations, and most recently as Vice President, Product Development, Americas, in which position he was responsible for the design and development of television and video systems including digital television with integrated HDTV decoders, projection systems and other advanced display systems, including the Thomson RCA L50000 LCoS project. From 1988 to 1994, Dr. Hakala held several management positions at Thomson Consumer Electronics including, General Manager, Tube Operations, North American Tube Division and General Manager, CRT Engineering and Development. Dr. Hakala began his professional career at RCA in 1976, and during the course of the next 12 years rose to the position of Manager, Manufacturing Process and Pilot Development in the company's Video Component and Display division. Dr. Hakala earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
