During the 1970s bike boom, Eugene Sloane was one of the foremost bicycle experts and author of "The Complete Book of Bicycling." In these same years he became Bicycle Editor at Popular Mechanics and wrote a monthly column for the magazine titled "The Bicycle Shop" that ran from 1972 until 1977.
In 2009 Popular Mechanics teamed up with Google, sending them a 106-year print archive of the magazine for unbinding and scanning. Google completed this task and made that archive free for browsing on the Internet. Thus all of Eugene Sloane's columns indexed below can be read as if you were looking at the paper magazine itself.
In addition to the monthly column, Sloane wrote two bicycle buying guides for the magazine, the first in June 1973, and the second a year later in June 1974. The 1973 guide is notable for being the cover article with a top-of-the-line Schwinn Paramount bicycle gracing the cover. Gene also used a Schwinn Paramount on the covers of the 1980 and 1988 editions of his book, probably a 1979 model of the bike.
Popular Mechanics has a mild rivalry going with Popular Science, and in a likely non-coincidence, PopSci published a cover article on bicycles in the same month that PopMech published their article. One magazine probably heard the other was doing this, and in an effort to be first both articles wound up being published in the same month. The cover of the June 1973 issue of PopSci shows a gentleman setting saddle height at the 109% inseam value that Eugene Sloane popularized. The PopSci article was not written by Sloane, but by their resident bike guru A. J. Hand. He also wrote a bicycle cover article for the July 1971 issue, where the classic Campagnolo Nuovo Record derailleur takes center stage.
In the article index below, click or tap the month to open the magazine on its cover page. From there you can scroll down a few pages to the magazine index, where each article is usually hyperlinked. If not, simply scroll down through the magazine to the page number listed.
