The Goonies

Goonies CED This movie came to mind recently when the two top-billed Goonies were making the talk show circuit for current projects - Sean Astin for The Two Towers and Josh Brolin for the Mister Sterling TV series. It's hard to believe that enough years have gone by for a Goonie to be a U.S. Senator, but you only have to be 30 years old.

"The Goonies" holds special significance for me, as my family was planning a move to Oregon when this movie hit the theaters in 1985, and I walked out of a showing thinking Oregon will be a cool place to live. It turned out to be true, as we moved here early in 1986, and I continue to reside in Oregon to the present day.

This movie was in the last batch of CED's RCA released in 1986 and thus is difficult to find, but it is also available on DVD with a lot of supplements. The most interesting thing about the DVD is the running audio commentary, in which the re-assembled child Goonies and director Richard Donner are alternately shown with scenes from the movie. The DVD also includes several deleted scenes, a short documentary, the theatrical trailer, and the 15-minute Cyndi Lauper music video "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough," which originally aired in two parts on MTV. This video has a number of 1980's wrestling icons in the cast including Andre the Giant and Rowdy Roddy Piper. There is even an RCA tie-in on this music video, as Cyndi is carrying around a Nipper statue in it. In the movie, the audio from this video starts playing as the ship sails away at the ending credits. Will Sean Astin be enacting a similar scene when the movie Return of the King comes out later this year?

The pictures below compare the Goonies from the 1986 CED to their present-day appearance on the DVD in select scenes throughout the movie. It's interesting to read about what the Goonies have done since this movie came out, which can be accomplished simply by clicking on their links to the Internet Movie Database. For the past few months, I've been working on an addition to CED Magic called "Who's Who in RCA VideoDisc" that will do a similar thing for many of the people involved with the design and production of the CED system. Look for it to appear as an addition to Memories of VideoDisc in the near future.

The Goonies CED The Goonies DVD All The Goonies

These two pictures compare the cast in 1985 to the Goonie regathering for the DVD. John Matuszak (Sloth) passed away in 1989, while director Richard Donner (center) joined the Goonies on the DVD. The pan-and-scan CED image shown here of the Goonies final appearance in the movie is actually a better composition than the widescreen image from the DVD.
Mikey - Sean Astin On CED Mikey - Sean Astin On DVD Mikey (Sean Astin)

Mikey is in the attic, encouraging his friends to go on the treasure hunt using the map they have discovered.
Brand - Josh Brolin On CED Brand - Josh Brolin On DVD Brand (Josh Brolin)

In the attic, Brand listens to his brother Mikey tell the story of pirate One-eyed Willie.
Chunk - Jeff Cohen On CED Chunk - Jeff Cohen On DVD Chunk (Jeff Cohen)

Chunk, having just completed the obligatory "truffle shuffle" watches as the Rube Goldberg device that gives him access to the Goonies house goes through its motions.
Mouth - Corey Feldman On CED Mouth - Corey Feldman On DVD Mouth (Corey Feldman)

Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) removes the string of pearls hidden in Mouth's mouth after the Goonies find the pirate treasure near the end of the movie.
Andy - Kerri Green On CED Andy - Kerri Green On DVD Andy (Kerri Green)

Andrea leads cheerleading practice at the beginning of the movie.
Stef - Martha Plimpton On CED Stef - Martha Plimpton On DVD Stef (Martha Plimpton)

Stefanie laughs as Andy accidentally smooches with Mikey in the caverns leading to the treasure.
Data - Ke Huy Quan On CED Data - Ke Huy Quan On DVD Data (Ke Huy Quan)

Data tests one of his 007 devices near the beginning of the movie. Notice the graffiti for the Astoria High School Fishermen behind Data.

The Goon Docks or the Goonies house, as it appears near the start of the CED, and as it appeared while undergoing renovation when I visited Astoria in 2003.

This table lists the CED titles I have classified as adventure movies. I used to have all my CED's organized by genre so it was necessary to assign each title to just one genre, as they could not physically reside in multiple shelf locations. So this list is somewhat subjective, as the line between an adventure movie and an action movie is not well defined. And none of these are animated as that's another genre in my classification.
