RCA Unveils its Stereo Video Disc Player and Catalog at Consumer Electronics
Show

CHICAGO, June 6 -- Consumers now can bring the magic home in stereo sound on
the RCA video disc system, Thomas G. Kuhn, Division Vice President, RCA
VideoDiscs, announced today.

RCA publicly demonstrated its stereo video disc player at the Consumer
Electronics Show and said the first 11 stereo disc albums are now available at
retail.

Mr. Kuhn said RCA plans to offer a continuing flow of new stereo discs,
including some original programs made specifically for the home video market.

Noting that stereo video discs will add a whole new dimension to home
entertainment, Mr. Kuhn said RCA "believes that music video will become a major
segment of the overall disc catalog." RCA video discs in stereo will offer rock
concerts, Broadway shows, movie musicals and great performances by top
entertainers.

"Many of the groups and stars that we will be offering on stereo video discs
have enormous followings. Their fans constantly fill concert halls and arenas.
Now for almost the same price as a ticket to a concert, they can enjoy their
favorite artists over and over again in the privacy of their own homes.
Television and music are very popular with young Americans, and discs that
combine sight and stereo sound offer them the best of both worlds," he added.

RCA's opening stereo catalog includes two Broadway musicals, two motion
pictures and performances by Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Rod
Stewart, Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, and The Who.

The new stereo discs include:

. . . "Eubie!", the smash Broadway musical based on the music of 99-year old
composer, Eubie Blake.

. . . "Pippin", starring Ben Vereen in a newly staged version of the hit
Broadway musical that blends songs and visuals based on Bob Fosse's Tony
Award-winning choreography.

. . . "The Jazz Singer", starring Neil Diamond, Laurence Olivier and Lucie
Arnaz.

. . . "Popeye", starring Robin (TV's "Mork") Williams as the spinach-eating
sailor and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl.

. . . "Neil Young -- Rust Never Sleeps", a rock performance that captured raves
from both critics and fans.

. . . "Rod Stewart Live at The Los Angeles Forum", a rock concert that includes
such classics as "Maggie May", "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" and "Hot Legs."

. . . "Paul McCartney & Wings -- Rockshow", an exciting film of the former
Beatle star on his 1976 American tour.

. . . "Paul Simon in Concert", a tribute to performer/ songwriter Simon's
popularity and creativity.

. . . "Pink Floyd at Pompeii", an intense audio-visual experience from the hard
rock group whose world-wide album sales total well over 20 million.

. . . "Joni Mitchell -- Shadows and Light", a performance fusing the jazz style
of guitarist Pat Metheny and tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker with Mitchell's
popular melodies and lyrics.

. . . "The Who -- The Kids Are Alright", a souvenir of this popular group's
best filmed and taped performances, plus interviews with the bandmembers
themselves, including the late Keith Moon.

All the discs are optionally priced at $24.98 with the exception of "The Jazz
Singer" and "Popeye", which are priced at $29.98.

* RCA PRESS RELEASE:
Sales of CED Video Disc Players and Discs Exceeded $90 Million in First 12
Months

CHICAGO, June 6 -- Despite the recession, American consumers spent more than
$90 million for CED video disc players and albums in the product's first year,
Thomas G. Kuhn, Division Vice President, RCA VideoDiscs, announced today.

"This means that video disc hardware and software sales in the first 12 months
exceeded the combined first-year sales volumes of black-and-white television,
color television, and video cassette recorders, an achievement that becomes
even more dramatic when viewed against the economic environment of the
past-year," Mr. Kuhn told a press dinner prior to the opening of the Consumer
Electronics Show here.

Mr. Kuhn said disc sales have far exceeded RCA's expectations. He said there
are some 250 titles currently available on the CED system, a number which is
expected to exceed 400 by year-end.

Of the 30 top grossing movies of all time, 14 currently are available on CED
format albums, including "Grease", "The Godfather", "Saturday Night Fever",
"Kramer vs. Kramer", "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", and "Superman." Of the
top 100 grossing films, RCA has licensed 50 and has already released 30 of
these on video discs.

A group of companies responsible for manufacturing and marketing the CED video
disc format will co-sponsor an exhibit on the main floor of the Consumer
Electronics Show. In addition to RCA, they include CBS and Fox Video, Hitachi,
MGM/UA, Sanyo, Toshiba and Zenith. The exhibit will feature a demonstration of
stereo video discs.

In addition to 11 new stereo video disc albums which were announced today, RCA
is releasing nine new monaural video disc titles in June and 13 more in July.
The June and July titles include a mix of recent and classic motion pictures,
sports programming and RCA's first dual track disc ("Jane Fonda's Workout"),
which gives the stereo player user a choice of listening to music and
instruction on one track, or music alone on the other. Mr. Kuhn also noted that
CED monaural and stereo discs are totally compatible and can be played on any
CED player.

The June releases are:	"The Deep", "The Producers", "Superman", "Dirty Harry",
"The Horse Soldiers", "California Suite", "Tess", "Modern Times", and "Family
Entertainment Playhouse, Volume II: The Ransom of Red Chief/Mr. Gimme/Shoeshine
Girl/Best Horse."

The new releases for July are: "The Three Musketeers", "Blazing Saddles", "Last
Tango in Paris", "The Adventures of Robin Hood", "White Lightning", "The Bugs
Bunny/Roadrunner Movie", "10", "The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea",
"Dr. No", "Love At First Bite," "Stripes", "Baseball Fun & Games", and "Jane
Fonda's Workout."

Mr. Kuhn added that "the rate of disc sales is a strong indication of consumer
satisfaction with the CED video disc system." He said that video disc player
owners who have owned the player for 12 months or more have already accumulated
an average of more than 32 discs. "We are finding that player owners are
interested in collecting video discs and that they are building libraries of
them, just as they do with books and audio records," Mr. Kuhn said.

"While we want our system to cater to the mass market," Mr. Kuhn continued, "we
also want to reach out to those consumers who have specific fields of program
preference -- classic movie fans, lovers of Shakespeare or the ballet, sports
fans, and so on. RCA will be promoting video discs by themes starting this
summer with the new category of stereo video discs and the very popular area of
children's programming."

Mr. Kuhn also noted that late this summer RCA VideoDiscs' first national print
advertising campaign will begin. The ads will stress the simplicity of player
operation, the affordability of the system and the diversity of entertainment
available.

"Based on the strength of disc sales and optimistic reports coming in from
dealers all over the country, I believe we will see the momentum behind the CED
system continue to accelerate through the end of 1982 and beyond. Several
dealers have reported disc sales in the first quarter of 1982 far in excess of
what they sold in all of 1981. Software is the locomotive behind this product,
and we're picking up steam," Mr. Kuhn said.

* RCA PRESS RELEASE:
RCA Video Discs Feature Dual Sound Tracks

'Jane Fonda's Workout' Will Be First RCA Video Disc to Give Consumers Choice of
Sound Tracks; Bilingual Video Discs Also Possible

"Jane Fonda's Workout" will be the first RCA video disc to utilize the unique
dual sound capability of the Capacitance Electronic Disc (CED) system, Seth M.
Willenson, Division Vice President, Programs and Business Affairs, RCA
VideoDiscs, announced today.

"Each groove on a CED video disc has two completely separate sound tracks,
which makes possible rich stereo sound, bilingual programs or a choice of audio
channels," he said.

The CED VideoDisc system has all the technical features to enable it to
accommodate the needs of the consumer. The Jane Fonda exercise disc, which will
be available at retail in July, gives owners of CED stereo video disc players
the choice of listening to music and instruction while they exercise, or to
music only, as part of a regular exercise routine, Mr. Willenson added.

He said that owners of monaural video disc players receive both music and
instruction. All CED discs can be played on either stereo or monaural players.

Mr. Willenson said the Jane Fonda video disc "demonstrates the great
flexibility we have on the CED system when it comes to audio. The options
available to the consumer will enhance the entertainment and educational value
of video discs and broaden the market potential of the system."

He noted "Jane Fonda's Workout" is a special 90-minute video adaption of Ms.
Fonda's exercise school program and bestselling book. Ms. Fonda designed the
workout to appeal to men and women, young and old. The CED disc will make this
popular program available internationally. "Jane Fonda's Workout" was produced
by Ms. Fonda for VideoDisc under the supervision of Richard D. Klinger, RCA
Director of Programming, West Coast.

The disc, which sells for $24.98, highlights the major price advantage of disc
versus prerecorded cassette. The cassette version of Ms. Fonda's exercise
program sells for about $60. A week at one of her exercise studios -- five
one-hour sessions would cost $32.50.

"RCA is committed to developing programming which meets the needs of the
consumer and which takes advantage of specific features of the CED VideoDisc
System, such as dual sound tracks," he said.

"As consumers become more aware of the technical features of the RCA system,
they will realize that the CED system is the most cost-efficient way of
building home video libraries tailored to their specific tastes and desires,"
Mr. Willenson added.

That white part is a heavy-duty wirewound resistor with a 120 ohm, 5 watt
rating that is associated with the 22 volt power supply on the system control
board. The fact that it got hot enough to smoke indicates a short circuit
forcing the component to pass in excess of five watts. These resistors don't
fail often, so it's likely the short arose elsewhere during the installation
process and merely manifested itself in that resistor. Unfortunately, it's
probably going to require some component-level circuit analysis to determine
the specific failure.

You should confirm that the system control board is screwed down properly, as
even a modest rotation of that board could produce such a short. Only the P515
connector should have been removed/replaced during the installation. If two or
more of these P connectors were removed, there's the possibility they were
replaced in the wrong order, which likewise would produce a short circuit.

Hi All,
After some 10 years of looking for the movie Raise the Titanic on CED,i just
found it!!!!some time ago,Tom Howe reviewed the CED in his Featured CED disc of
the month on the CED Magic sight. it's so cool what CBS FOX did with it for the
CED Vershion! if any body has this great film on CED,hold onto it. it's Damn
rare!!!! The late great RICHARD JORDEN play's Dirk Pit to a tee and the effecs
are pritty good too. not high art mind you but still a cool film.
