From 1978 to 1981 Barry Stevens was responsible for process and material engineering at VideoDisc operations in Indianapolis. From 1981 to 1984 he was Director of VideoDisc Development and Coordination at CBS Records where he was responsible for startup, development, manufacturing and cost improvement of the RCA VideoDisc.
RCA CORPORATION, VIDEODISC OPERATION, Indianapolis, IN (5/78 to 5/81)
Member of Technical Staff: Responsible for process and material engineering. Coordinated product development programs to rapidly launch the VideoDisc. Responsible for the development of process and precision test equipment. Established a pilot line and production equipment. Successfully assisted media team in designing and developing a manufacturable product. Invented (obtained 3 U.S. patents) and implemented within 5 months a critical multi-step manufacturing process that promoted product reliability and long-term field stability. Enabled RCA to meet the announced market introduction data. Increased process yield to 85%. Improved equipment efficiency to 92%. Expanded output from 200 to 1000 discs per hour. Established failure analysis and subsequent corrective action programs that resulted in significant product performance improvement. Managed three engineers and four technicians.
CBS, INC., RECORDS GROUP, Milford, CT (5/81 to 9/84)
Director of VideoDisc Development and Coordination: Responsible for startup, development, manufacturing and cost improvement of RCA's revolutionary VideoDisc. Directed all engineering activities in precision tooling, electroforming, resin production, injection and compression molding, finishing, packaging, quality assurance, and industrial engineering. Managed a $25.6 million budget as well as all financial planning and cost analysis. Managed all process standards and improvements. Met or exceeded all production and development goals associated with state-of-the-art VideoDisc production. Provided earlier-than-expected sales by initiating production four months ahead of schedule. Ensured the successful operation of the manufacturing plant. Created yield improvement programs that provided higher-than-planned production yields (1984: 82% actual, 75% planned). Developed, implemented and realized cost improvement programs that reduced labor and material costs by 26%. Increased asset utilization by 70%. Established and coordinated quality improvement programs that lowered field returns from 7% (1982) to 2% (1984). Resolved critical customer delivery and quality problems. Trained several small and highly efficient engineering teams. Established and controlled a $2.4 million R&D budget and assisted in the preparation and audit of the manufacturing budget. Staff; managed ten engineers and technicians. Line; supervised one manager, seven engineers and eight technicians as well as coordinating the effort of the plant management and factory personnel.
EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY, Rochester, NY (9/84 to 2/89)
Operations Manager, Venture Projects - Eastman Technology, Inc.: Initiated, championed, developed, and finalized two integrated optical disc ventures. Responsible for establishing, startup and product development of a ROM optical publishing service venture and an associated compact disc replication venture. Obtained over $500,000 of seed financing to establish the ventures. Produced CD-ROM applications with five year cost savings in excess of $300,000. Created two comprehensive business plans building sales from $10.3 million to $160.8 million and from $1.9 million to $34.3 million, respectively. Launched all activities necessary to facilitate product delivery. Established a pilot line and machine shop for the development of prototypes and unique process equipment. Commissioned market intelligence and market research studies. Coordinated all market strategies that maximized growth (2% to 13% US share) and earning (EFO from 14% to 55%). Instituted a two-year development program of a proprietary replication process to provide a competitive price advantage by lowering manufacturing costs by 21%. Demonstrated, six months ahead of schedule, prototype discs from the novel process. Conducted executive presentations to Kodak's senior management. Negotiated a $17.4 million joint venture relationship with two multinational corporations. Recruited the management, engineering, and manufacturing teams. Managed four engineers and fourteen engineers.
MEMORY-TECH, INC., Plano, TX (9/87 to 2/90)
Executive Assistant and Director of R&D: Memory-Tech was a joint venture of Japan's Mitsubishi Corp. and ElectroSound Group, Inc. of New York. Worked closely with Japanese management and technical staff to provide high quality products that satisfy global market requirements. Responsible for planning, marketing and product development activities. Managed a $76.7 million operating budget. R&D responsibilities involved developing new information storage products and services. Established CD-Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) production capability. Developed and implemented strategies and tactics for front-end value added CD-ROM data preparation services. Provided market planning and technical direction for ROM and Writable Optical products. Supervised four managers, nineteen engineers/technicians and 81 non-exempt employees.
ALCON LABORATORIES, INC., Fort Worth, TX (2/90 to 1/92)
Associate Director of Development: Alcon is a leader in Ophthalmic drugs, devices, and instruments. Directed the development of Intraocular Lenses. Specific emphasis is given to worldwide markets and to provide superior products ahead of competition. Managed a $2.3 million budget. Responsible for product development, technical services and quality assurance. Worked directly with ophthalmologists and surgeons to develop the medical devices and associated delivery systems. Managed all operational, financial and strategic efforts. Secured FDA's approval for investigation of three state-of-the-art lenses. Coordinated activities with Marketing, Regulatory Affairs, Manufacturing, and Corporate Quality Assurance. Managed one director, three managers, twelve engineers/technicians and 20 non-exempt employees.
RADIOSHACK, A Division of Tandy Corporation, Forth Worth, TX (1/92 to 1/97)
Senior Director of Engineering: Directed the development and evaluation of consumer electronics and computer products. Responsible for strategic planning, improving time-to-market, product quality and reliability. Managed a $3.0 million budget. Coordinated all engineering activities for Source Offices in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea. Developed standards, specifications for a wide variety of consumer electronics products. Specific emphasis was given to telephone terminal equipment, speakers and audio products. Instrumental in developing a new line of telecommunications and home theater products. Reduced time-to-market by 9 months, defective returns by 10% and in-warranty repairs by 3%. Managed two directors, one manager and 39 engineers/technicians.
TBD AMERICA, INC., Arlington, TX (1/97 to Present)
Principal: TBD America is a Technology Business Development consulting firm specializing in technology-based products and services. Specific emphasis on operations, business planning, financial analysis, marketing and sales support, product development, and manufacturing. Clients include companies involved in read-write optical discs, computer peripherals, wireless LAN technology and ophthalmology. Grew a start-up company from $250k to over $4.5 million is annual sales within 16 months. Coordinated the development of a proprietary Class III medical device under a grant awarded by the National Institute of Health. Instrumental in establishing the marketing, OEM and licensing opportunities for a startup company in the fax industry. Worked with the U.S. Department of Energy, several research facilities and investors to establish a program for commercialization of hydrogen as a renewable, sustainable and practice source of energy. Member of the Board of Directors for Value Technology, Inc. a California company with a high-tech process to detoxify hazardous liquid waste streams.
SUPERIOR CONCRETE PRODUCTS, Arlington, TX (1/97 to Present)
Sr. Vice President - Sales and Engineering: Superior Concrete Products is a fully integrated company devoted to the manufacture and installation of pre-cast concrete walls for the residential, commercial, industrial, and governmental markets. Specific emphasis on increasing sales, expanding share in existing markets, tapping new markets, new product development and manufacturing improvement. Obtained certification of the manufacturing plant by the National Pre-cast Concrete Association (only 60 plants in the US are certified). Established a comprehensive quality assurance program and product standards documents. Directly responsible for all sales activities, marketing programs, product improvement and product development. Awarded "Certified Fence Professional" by the American Fence Association. Received Architectural Precast Concrete Fence Contractors License in States of Oklahoma and Louisiana.
